It's been a long time since my last post (I guess I'm a bad blogger!)!!! Dartmouth Football Parents News and Notes was created three years ago to help new parents navigate through the football season and to post some of my scrapbook pages and posters. I will be dedicating the blog this year to the senior class ('09's) since this is my son's last year (Cummings #70 '09).

Here's my first project of the 2008 football season!
My husband wanted a new desktop with the schedule like the one I created last year.
There are easy directions on how to install to your computer desktop below and I even included a video tutorial!

Directions: Click on the photo above to enlarge>right click to save to your desktop>pictures.
Make sure it is in your picture folder. Go to>Control Panel>Desktop Appearance>Browse>Select Picture>Center or Stretch>Apply.

Last year I created a wallpaper for the computer with the Dartmouth Schedule.
A number of you have asked me for the 2007 Schedule so here it is!!!

Directions on how to put on your computer are below...
MAKE SURE YOU DOUBLECLICK the picture to enlarge it before saving to your
picture folder or save as >desktop. For most of you the 15" will work on your
17" monitors.

The calendar says spring is officially here, some may disagree here in Hanover!

However, we all know a little cold weather and snow will not stop The Big Green!!

While our first official Spring Scrimmage is April 28th at 11am, our annual Green and White game will be Saturday, May 5th . Kickoff is scheduled for 11am.

Following the game there will be a BBQ for all to enjoy. Cost is $5.00 per person. We will be collecting money at the BBQ. Please RSVP to Karry Smardon no later then April 23rd!!

We will see you there!!

First stop was the reception area! I have to say that the Columbia crowd was very welcoming.

Don't you think this guy is alot cuter than our Keggy? I think the warm and fuzzy cuddly type of mascot is much more appealing than someone in tights with a tin can around them!

Here are a few pics from the day. Weather was in the 60's with a mixed bag of sun, clouds, and light rain.

A big crowd of alumni, parents, family and friends came from all over the country to watch the Dartmouth vs. Penn game.

We had the opportunity to visit with Daniel Liebsch '98, now residing in Philadephia with his wife.

An interesting tradition of Penn. The the alma mater song "Here's a "toast"...

it up.

The Norwich Inn...

Joe Lavin bought the Norwich Inn this August. It is a 27-room full service Inn, located across the river on Main St in Norwich Vermont, just 1.5 miles from the Dartmouth Green. I recently had the pleasure of talking with him about his Inn and Dartmouth Football connection.

Q: What is your connection to Dartmouth Football?
A: My son, Tyler Lavin ‘05 was the place kicker for the team from ’01 to ’04. I came to virtually every game and many times stayed at the Inn. There were often other Dartmouth parents there and we just came to love the atmosphere.

Q: What prompted you to buy the Inn?
A: I had been a career corporate hotelier with a number of companies; mostly engaged in strategic planning, development and franchising. I had observed, with great respect, the entrepreneurs who make our industry go and always wanted to be one of them. So I finally took the plunge this year, buying the Norwich Inn. It has a great location, and is an historic, one-of-a-kind property. I grew up in the Boston area and love Dartmouth and the Upper Valley. What could be better?

Q: What kind of services does the Inn offer?
A: We have 27 guest rooms, a restaurant and pub. We make our own beer on site—Jasper Murdock’s Ales--and has a great following in our very lively pub. The Inn is reasonably priced and very convenient to the Campus—about 3-4 minutes, depending upon traffic, such as it is in the Valley.

Q: Are you going to be relocating to the area to manage the Inn?
A: My wife, Jill, and I love the area and will be looking to relocate over the next year or so. I have hired some very able and energetic Innkeepers to manage the property day to day. They are Jason and Tiffany Gershon, a newlywed couple who have just moved up from Connecticut. I will often be at the Inn and hope to say hello to any parents if they are staying or eating with us.

Q: How can you work with the Football parents?
A: Football weekends are always full for our guest room business—this fall is already sold out; some of our customers are football parents. So think about next season early.

I would like to offer a special room rate for the parents coming to the season-end 2006 football awards banquet. We will take 30% of our normal rates which range from $84-$169.

If there is enough interest, I will open our Pub (which is normally closed on Mondays) just for the parents to gather and continue the evening after the conclusion of the banquet.

As for other times when the parents may be visiting, I urge them to call the Inn and ask for myself or Innkeepers Jason and/or Tiffany, and mention you are a football parent—we’ll go the extra mile meet your needs.

Of course,the pub and restaurant are a great place for people to gather so we’d love to accommodate anyone who comes over. If you call for a reservation, mention that you are a “Football Parent”.

If you haven't mailed in your friends of football donation you can sign up etc. before the game at the FOF tent...that will be available every home game. Because of NCAA rules, parents will need to check in at the Parents of Players check-in table and also get a nametag.

The game was very exciting. Dartmouth held Colgate to a 7-6 score until the last half of the last quarter. Parents from all over the country came...Florida, California, Kentucky, and Georgia to name a few! There were also the "hometown" fans who brought family and friends from Syracuse! It was a great crowd, a great day, and good football (unfortunately ending up in a loss.)

To use...

Last year Chris Green '06 collected money in November for Marshall Manning's family.
I just recently came across the email Chris sent in my saved folder ...and thought I would post it. Just a reminder to all of us that we are part of a big picture and how Chris Green gathered the Dartmouth Football community to rally around a family who needed help.

Dear Dartmouth Football Family -
I wanted to let you all know an update regarding the money that we raised for Marshall Manning's family. I am happy to tell you all that we raised almost exactly $4500 for the Manning family. I can honestly say that I am completely surprised that we raised that much money. When I first sent out the letter to everyone and if someone would have told me that we would raise $1000 I would have been shocked to even raise that much. But once I sent out the letter my Hinman Box everyday was filled with letters, cards, and donations from so many people who wanted to help the family. All I can say to you all is thank you. Whether your donation was $5 or $250, every single thought meant something very important to the Manning family. This also shows the type of people that make up the Dartmouth Football family. Amazingly generous, genuine, and caring people who care deeply for their sons' and the Dartmouth Football program. Once again thank you very much to everyone who was a part of this, honestly I cannot thank you all enough for making this a wonderful experience not only for the Manning family, but for me as well. I think this is a true testament to how much people can accomplish when they come together to help others. Thank you again for all your generosity, kind words and thoughts and I wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday season.

Hello from Hanover!

Our preseason return date is just around the corner and we hope that you are as excited as each member of our staff about getting our 2006 campaign underway!

It has been a productive summer for the coaches and your teammates in Hanover. The vacation spots were varied – Coach Wilkerson was out in the Mid-west Illinois and Indiana and took in the Brickyard 400 NASCAR event in Indianapolis. Coach Hodgson spent time in Castine, Maine with his family and has toured the Northwest following his daughter’s softball travel team. Florida was a popular spot with Coach Brockmeier in Tampa, and Coaches McCorkle and Calhoun at Disney World in Orlando. I was at Crescent Beach, and also did a football camp in Louisiana. The golf courses of Myrtle Beach lured Coach Hollis south. Coach Smiley visited the Bahamas and Coach Davis spent time with family back in Oklahoma. The little league baseball circuit kept Coach Oberg traveling Massachusetts and New York this summer, and our newest staff member Jerrail Jackson just concluded his Arena 2 football season with the Oklahoma Yard Dawgz!

Housing

*Upperclassmen will check in with the housing office to pick up your keys following your check-in at the football office.

*Freshmen will pick up your keys in the football office for pre-season housing in the Lodge, which is one block from the football office.

*Off-campus or fraternity members will also pick up keys to the Lodge, where you will be housed until your residence becomes available.

*Freshmen will move out of the Lodge on September 5^th. We will assist in your re-location
to your fall dorm assignments with cars, vans, etc. Bring to campus anything that you feel you need for the fall quarter if you do not wish to have items delivered or shipped to you at a later date.

Clothing Needs

*We will furnish you with all athletic attire.

Pre-season Schedule

We will outline this in more detail upon your arrival to campus. Key points are:

We will be involved everyday from August 22^nd through Saturday, September 2^nd

*Sunday, September 3^rd will be an off day, though we discourage travel of great length away from campus.

*Monday, September 4^th through Saturday, September 9^th are work days. Following the Saturday workout and lunch, the players will be off until Sunday evening. Again, we discourage travel of great distance during this free time.

*Freshman trips will be conducted on either 8/31 or 9/7 for 4 days. We will provide more detail as your trip date draws near.

Medical

*All freshmen must have a documented physical prior to your arrival on campus

*Our medical staff will also evaluate you when you arrive on campus

*If you have had surgery, x-rays, or are being treated for any illness or injury, be prepared
to provide copies of all reports, evaluations, x-rays, etc. for our physicians. Any prescription medication you are taking should be reported and information furnished for our medical staff.

There certainly may be additional questions that you may have. Our staff will be calling you prior to your arrival on campus, and please feel free to call them with and last-minute questions or needs.

and is a great place to post questions, answers, and meet up with other parents for tailgates, etc.
If you haven't signed up yet...email me at dartmouthfootballparent@yahoo.com. I promise to check my mail there at least once/day! All information on the group is private for the parents...so join up now if you haven't aleady!
Anybody can post messages, questions, and create database lists. There is even a "poll" section which would be great if you wanted to send out a general invite to meet up in Hanover pregame or postgame!

Please feel free to start up message postings regarding returning to school, calendar, the tailgates, feeding the players after games, etc. The message board has a database list which is a great resource for contacting people. There is also a list called "The Never Ending College List" that is a helpful tool for back-to-school shopping.

Coach Teevens wanted a meeting place on the net for parents...so this is it! I hope it helps create a community spirit among the parents this year and I look forward to seeing many of you (especially freshman parents) on August 21st !

Interview with Bruce Wood - Part One

Here is Part One of my interview with Bruce Wood. Come back tomorrow for Part Two and find out what is Bruce's favorite thing to do in NH and his favorite dessert!

Describe yourself in ONE word...

(note : after interviewing you I would say the word would be: Interesting!)

Q: Where did you grow up/go to school/and some other interesting facts about yourself?
I grew up in central New Jersey, but hardly the New Jersey of the Sopranos and the New Jersey Turnpike. Home was in Somerset County at the edge of the Watchung Mountains. I’ve always been a bicycle rider and the rolling hills of Somerset Country horse and farm country were where I always gravitated. There and the Jersey Shore.

I went to Upsala College as a math major, graduated as an English major and eventually earned a master’s in journalism at Penn State, a place I love.

Some interesting facts about myself, huh? Let’s see. I rode a bicycle from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean twice, camping the whole way. The stories I can tell ... . It took me 31 days to go from the Seattle area to New York City on my solo first trip. ... I worked the better part of two full years on a moving truck between college and grad school. I got to see a lot of the country working for Bekins and still have my old white jump suit with my name on it. ... I love traveling and have been to 49 states. The only one I’ve missed: Kansas of all places. My kids love to tease me about that. We’ll be going cross country this summer in our ‘84 Volkswagen Westfalia camper bus with 90,000 original miles on it but won't be going through Kansas, dagnabit. (We will be gone June 24-July 21 so the Green Alert will be on hiatus then.)

Tell us about your family.
My wife, Mary, is the diabetes clinical nurse specialist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with degrees from UNH and Boston University and limitless patience. We have two children, Kelly Anne, 14, and Matt, 12. Both are terrific athletes, big sports fans, diehard Dartmouth supporters and dedicated students. Kelly is the only girl playing junior high baseball in the area (she's her team's fleet-footed starting center-fielder) and Matt is a catcher and leading hitter on the Little League team I coach. The final member of the family is Cooper, a 2-year-old golden retriever.

Q: Where do you live and why?
Etna is a rural area of Hanover ... and we live in a rural area of Etna ;-). Our house is about 1.5 miles up a dirt road (fifth house on the right), high enough on Moose Mountain that we can have six inches of snow when all they get in town is rain, and our flowers bloom a week or two later than they do on campus. It’s a great place to live with miles of wilderness and the Appalachian Trail out our back door and views of five ski areas (Killington, Pico, Ascutney, Okemo and sometimes Stratton Mountain) across the road on a clear day. Why do we live here? We are less than 8 miles from campus but have nine acres of land, total privacy, gorgeous views, complete peace and quiet and easily the best school system in northern New England. Except for mud season it’s about as wonderful a place to live as you could imagine.

Q: Why did you decide to create the Big Green Alert and Blog?
The more years I went without a raise at the newspaper the more I started to wonder what someone with my peculiar skill set could do without leaving such a wonderful area in which to raise my family. It was in February of 2005 that I decided I had to do something. I’ve developed enough contacts at the newspaper that I thought I could make a go of freelancing but wasn’t ready to give up covering Dartmouth football, something I truly enjoy. Green Alert offered me the opportunity to continue doing something I love -- and something I think I’m pretty good at -- while at the same time (hopefully) having a guaranteed income for a defined period of time. So far, so good, although it you knew what I make per hour with Green Alert it would make you cry.

Q: When did it all start?
The Green Alert web site went up last June, just in time for the Dartmouth football golf outing. I left the paper at that point and began posting regularly on it in July.

Q: What else are you doing to make ends meet?
Thanks for asking. I do as much freelance writing as I can scrounge up including stories for out-of-town newspapers, the Associated Press, small magazines, trade publications and the like. I've done a number of contract projects for Dartmouth as well. I've also started a business called Remember When? It's aimed at helping senior citizens share their stories with their descendants. I produce hard-bound Life History books, Oral Histories and DVD Slide Shows. Let's see. What else? I applied to teach journalism at Colby-Sawyer College, a small school about 30 miles from here but nothing has come of that yet. I'm doing some advertising/PR work for an Internet startup helping colleges share digital scouting films online (http://www.ezxchanges.com) and for the Vermont Open pro golf tournament at Lake Morey Country Club.

In a perfect world I'd be able to live up to that slogan, All Dartmouth Football, All the Time, but until I convince someone to take out a nice, expensive ad on the site and drum up some more subscribers (a lot more, actually) I'll be scrambling. If you know of anyone who wants a personal history done, send 'em my way. (I did one oral history over the phone and it turned out pretty good if I say so myself ;-)

Q: How long have you been covering Dartmouth/Ivy Football?
I started at the Valley News after finishing up at Penn State in ‘79. The first two years my coverage pretty much amounted to attending the weekly football luncheon and writing a column out of that. I’ve been heavily involved covering Dartmouth and Ivy football (as well as most Ivy sports) since 1983.

As a Dartmouth football parent, I have to say your blog is fascinating and I know you must spend hours upon hours researching and providing information on everything Dartmouth. Not exactly a question...but feel free to elaborate on your background in paper news and how you've developed networks throughout the country.
I guess it’s one of those deals where if you hang around long enough you get to know a lot of people and if you do right by them they’ll do right by you. I remember one year, for example, Dartmouth was playing Princeton in a winner-take-all game for the Ivy League championship and coaches around the league trusted me enough to give me insights as to how they thought the game would turn out with the caveat that I not use their names. It made for a really interesting story. In 1996 when Dartmouth went undefeated, I was able to talk with former Ivy coaches who had moved on to other leagues about how they thought Dartmouth would have fared if it had been allowed to play in the NCAA playoffs. (For the record, they thought the Big Green would have had a chance to win at least a game or two.) Having a good system of contacts was really helpful when Dartmouth was hiring Coach Lyons and later Coach Teevens, two athletic directors and two basketball coaches. I’ll brag a little and say I got each one of those stories in print before the college released the names. I think the people at the college respected the work I did at the paper, but I know that kind of bugged 'em a little. ;-)

One of the most amazing things about your blog is that you post EVERYDAY on it.. I absolutely love visiting your blog! How is the blog different from the website?
Since February or so it really hasn’t been much different. The Blog is intended to be a place where people can stop by and get a really quick fix of Dartmouth, Dartmouth football and Ivy League football/sports. Obviously it is mostly links at this point. As the season nears the longer “premium” material that I generate (game stories, feature stories, columns, opinions and the always popular Optimist-Pessimist) will migrate back to the regular site where it will be available to paid subscribers. Unfortunately, that’s the only way I can afford to keep doing this. The Blog will revert to being what I call “quick hits.”

Q: How does a person subscribe to the Big Green Alert?
The charge is $50 for the year. I had lots of headaches last year with the subscription process because the automated system didn’t work consistently and I couldn’t afford to gamble and spend the money to have someone design a system that did because I had no idea if anyone would sign up. As we speak I have a very nice, very patient, very (financially) understanding local web developer working on a new site that will not only automate the sign-on procedure, but allow me to take credit cards. Last year I could only take checks through the U.S. mail and that led to all kinds of adventures.

Q: What do you do on pregame/game/post game day that makes your Big Green Alert one of the best sources of information?
First, I spend too much time on the Internet each morning, and I’m at every single practice including double sessions. I talk to people before practice, during practice (not the players during practice – that's a no-no) and after practice. I also spend a lot of time around the gym and football offices. I’m fortunate because in doing what I did for the newspaper for as long as I did, I tried to treat people the right way and they recognize that. As a result, they know that if they tell me something I won’t violate their confidence or use information the wrong way, so I hear things I might not otherwise hear.

You asked specifically about game days. I try to be at the stadium by 10 a.m., or so. I'll schmooze the sports information people, see if I can trade insights with the radio folks, catch up with a few administrators and see if I can glean anything useful from the assistant coaches before the team comes out. Postgame is a scramble because after the press conference I'm trying my darndest to get good information out in a timely matter. I try to have two stories up by 8 p.m., or so, which doesn't leave much time.

Q: What do you see in the upcoming year that excites you about the BIG GREEN Football Team?
Good question. I see a team that has had enough losing. A team that has had a year to acclimate to a new coaching staff and a new system. A team that has had a year working hard to grow bigger and stronger. I see a team that has a good combination of maturity and exciting young talent. I see a team that has the potential to be in every Ivy League game of the year.

Here he is in the press box during the spring game football game. I know he doesn't like his picture taken :) so I had to climb all the way up the bleachers to get this pic. But...I didn't realize I would be risking my life to get it!

Unfortunately, once I got all the way to the top of the stadium to take the picture, I realized that I couldn't get back down! I have a fear of heights and there are no railings to help get yourself down. Luckily for me I had Kenny Servis, brother of Nate Servis '09, help me down by letting me hold on to his arm! Thank you Kenny!

The spring football game and barbeque seemed to be big success. Thanks to the Dartmouth Football Coaches, Staff, Green & White Teams and especially Leslie Parker for making the day special.

Music by Lou's Mobile Music added a festive touch during the football game. The fans were entertained throughout the game with music. Some of the music selections included Jimmy Buffett tunes.

Hello from Hanover!

It is wonderful to know that our parent’s website/blog site is now a reality thanks to the effort, imagination and time put in by Sue Cummings! We hope that a line of communication and flow of information between parents, friends, and families will be enjoyable, helpful and insightful.

From time to time our office will send along dates, calendars, pictures and information that your wonderful sons may (may not!) pass along to you. The true aim of the website/blog is to allow you as parents an opportunity to build relationships that will be rewarding in many ways… Have fun as you embark on Dartmouth Football’s first venture into this area!!!

Nutritional Assistance

We are currently providing protein shakes and protein bars as well as fresh fruit, whole wheat bread and peanut butter for all of our squad members… Our Friends of Football group, of which many of you are involved, is funding this program.

Spring Job Seminar

Following last fall initial “career day” we will have another opportunity for our players to learn about a wide variety of career choices and opportunities that have attracted former Dartmouth Football players. This one day effort allows your sons to learn and inquire about “how, what, why” of professions that may interest them. If any of you would like to join us as presenters please let us know!

That is all for now but we will be in contact again at the end of the quarter. Until then, our squad is making progress. We had a productive winter with those both on and off campus making much needed strength gains.

Spring practice will be critical to help us improve the consistency of our performance at each position. Too often in the past we would “do it right” then “do it incorrectly” – our push this spring is the following:

Know your assignment
Execute your responsibility consistently
Be meticulous in attending to the details of your job

Though we have much work to do the effort and attitude of your sons is making a difference and is moving Dartmouth football forward.

Well...finally sent out a mass email letting the football parents know about this blog.

A yahoo group for Dartmouth football parents was also started for posting info and creating a network for the parents. If you want to find out the details for the yahoo group, just email me and I will send you an invite. The yahoo group is only for parents of the Dartmouth football team. There is also a calendar on the yahoo group site to look up important dates.

Some important dates coming up are the Freshman '09 Parents Weekend (April 28th, 29th, 30th) and the Spring Football Game (May 6th). Details from the football office will be sent this week on the spring practices, game and a barbeque.
